Brand Activations

Brand Activations and Launch Events

Last updated

MOMENTOUS designs and builds brand activations and launch events for developers, retailers, media brands and the region's signature events. Based in Palm Springs, we have built a sales studio at The American Express golf tournament, a buyer experience on the future site of Coral Mountain before a single home was built, and VIP brand experiences during Coachella weekends and Modernism Week.

What counts as a brand activation, and how is it different from a party?

A brand activation is an experience built to make people feel what a brand stands for, usually so they take a next step: book a tour, buy, or remember the name. A party is judged by whether guests had a good night. An activation is judged by what the brand gets from the guests who walked in.

The difference shows in the design. Every element of an activation, from the furniture to the photo moment, carries the brand's story. At Coral Mountain, the driving range, communal fire pit and custom Airstream lounge were each chosen to reflect the community's approach to desert living.

Three kinds of activation we build

Activations inside a larger event

The audience is already there. The job is to give them a reason to stop.

  • Disney Cotino at The American Express 2026: MOMENTOUS once again partnered with Disney and Cotino to design and fabricate a remote sales studio and immersive booth at the tournament in La Quinta. The space brought the lifestyle of Disney's Cotino community in Rancho Mirage to tournament guests, turning casual eventgoers into engaged prospects.

Real estate and development launches

A development sells a future that does not exist yet. The activation has to put buyers or community leaders in that future while they stand on the site.

  • Meriwether Companies at Coral Mountain: designed in place of a traditional sales center, this branded installation on the future site of Coral Mountain in La Quinta invited prospective buyers onto the land before a single home was built.
  • Disney Cotino: the sales studio above took the Cotino vision beyond its physical location.
  • Dream Hotels Palm Springs Groundbreaking: working with the Dream Hotels brand and the hotel developer, MOMENTOUS staged a VIP reception on the soon-to-be-demolished site of the new hotel.
  • Desert AIDS Project Vision 2020 Launch: a multi-day installation that culminated in the 2018 campaign launch and groundbreaking, bringing the campaign into view of local leadership.

Retail, media and product launches

Some are intimate, built for a guest list that matters to the brand. Others are built for a crowd.

  • Saks Fifth Avenue Exclusive Client Dinner: an intimate dinner on the exterior campus of the Palm Springs Art Museum, with creative, décor, off-premise catering, technical production, lighting design and live music.
  • Dwell Magazine: a VIP brand experience during Modernism Week, created with Dwell's sponsor Volvo and staged in one of the most architecturally significant homes in the desert.
  • Forever 21 Cranechella: a VIP experience for more than 700 guests during the Coachella weekends in 2014, built with Forever 21's agency partners around a 60-foot crane that suspended the musical acts, plus gifting suites and food and beverage trucks.
  • It's A No Grainer Book Launch: an outdoor launch for author Barbara Rogers at Wally's Desert Turtle in Rancho Mirage in 2022, attended by media and friends of the author.

Can you build inside someone else's event, such as a golf tournament or festival week?

Yes. When a brand's space sits within an event run by someone else, it has to work within that event's site, schedule and rules. MOMENTOUS has built at The American Express golf tournament for Disney Cotino, and staged brand experiences during the Coachella weekends for Forever 21 and during Modernism Week for Dwell.

The desert calendar brands plan around

Each season Greater Palm Springs hosts a run of signature events that draw visitors and media. Brands plan around them because the audience is already in town. Dates change every year, so confirm them with each event's organizer before you commit a budget.

  • Modernism Week. MOMENTOUS has designed and produced Modernism Week's Opening Night celebration in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 2026 event welcomed nearly 1,000 guests to more than 20,000 square feet of hangar space at the Palm Springs Air Museum, and the 2023 edition at Indian Canyons Golf Resort included branded entertainment and experiential activations. The week also draws brand events of its own, such as Dwell's.
  • The American Express. The golf tournament in La Quinta is where we built the Disney Cotino studio.
  • Festival season. The Coachella weekends bring brands to the valley for their own VIP experiences, as Forever 21 did. For what happens after the festivals leave, read Beyond Festival Season.

Who handles permits, power, structures and security?

MOMENTOUS does, as part of planning the site. Our team handles contracts, permits, schedules and local rules, and our case studies list advanced site logistics, staffing, security and parking plans alongside the design. One planning team follows the vendors and the work on site through setup, the event and breakdown.

Building on open desert

Coral Mountain was the future site of a community where no home had yet been built. The Dream Hotels reception stood on a site waiting for demolition. College of the Desert's State of the College 2020 needed a tent pavilion built to house it. None of these sites came with what a ballroom provides.

As general guidance, an open-air site has to bring in:

  • Structures and tenting: shade by day, cover from wind, and a defined space for the brand.
  • Power: for lighting, audio, video, kitchens and climate control, placed so cables stay out of guest paths.
  • Flooring and decking: a level, safe surface over sand or dirt, as at Coral Mountain.
  • Climate: heaters for cool desert evenings, shade and cooling for warm afternoons.
  • Access and safety: parking, guest paths, lighting after dark, restrooms and security.

How do you measure whether it worked?

Measure against the goal you set before the design began. For a sales activation that is usually the number of qualified conversations, tours booked or leads captured. For a launch it may be attendance, press coverage or what guests share.

The case studies describe the result each client was after. At The American Express, the Cotino space turned casual eventgoers into curious, engaged prospects. At Coral Mountain, the experience let sales leadership connect with buyers while they stood on the land. After every event, MOMENTOUS closes with reconciliation, a recap and the assets to carry the momentum forward, the last step of our five-step process.

A brand activation is an experience designed so guests feel what a brand stands for and take a next step. A party is judged by the guests' night; an activation is judged by what the brand gets from it.
